Jets guard Willie Colon will have knee surgery, out indefinitely

Jets right guard Willie Colon must undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and will be sidelined indefinitely.

Colon, who received a one-year, $2 million contract from the Jets in March, had been recovering from biceps surgery. Coach Rex Ryan did not specify what the injury is, but said Colon injured the knee while working out.

“A knee needs to be scoped, so he’s going to have that. That’s something that just came up,” Ryan said. “He was really doing well on his rehab. That’s going to hold him back. We’re not going to throw him out there. We’re not playing the Patriots anytime soon. We have to do what’s best for him.”

The loss of Colon is significant for the Jets, who do not have much depth along the offensive line. Second-year player Oday Aboushi replaced Colon with the starting offense during OTAs over the last two days. Aboushi played tackle last season, but was inactive for every game.

Running back Chris Johnson made some waves Tuesday night when he tweeted the Jets should acquire disgruntled Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson. Chris Johnson explained Wednesday why he tweeted it.

“I was watching TV and seeing all the stories going on,” he said. “I don’t think the Texans would let him loose or anything, but me playing in the AFC South, having to play this guy twice every year, knowing he’s a very good player. He’s also a good friend of mine. Anytime you’ve got a friend in the league, you always want to play with him.”

Ryan declined to comment on possibly adding Andre Johnson, since he is under contract with the Texans.

First-round pick Calvin Pryor sat out the first two days of OTAs because of wisdom teeth that need to be removed. The hard-hitting safety said he plans on having them out by the end of the week.

“My mouth is kind of swollen, so I can’t put my helmet on,” Pryor said. “So [the trainers] don’t want me out there with contact right now.”

Pryor did participate in some positional drills.

The Jets signed their sixth-round draft pick, cornerback Brandon Dixon. They have two remaining unsigned draft picks — Pryor and cornerback Dexter McDougle. Ryan said McDougle reminds him of Darrelle Revis in how he approaches walk-through practices.

Players who did not practice Wednesday during OTAs — which are voluntary — were Colon, Pryor, Chris Johnson (knee), linebacker Antwan Barnes (knee), McDougle (shoulder), running back Daryl Richardson (turf toe) and wide receiver Quincy Enunwa (undisclosed). Wide receiver David Nelson was not at practice due to an illness. Running back Mike Goodson was not at practice, and rookie wide receiver Shaq Evans is finishing up school and remains at UCLA.
