Reggie Jackson: ‘Silly’ to call David Ortiz Mr. October

Reggie Jackson is a huge fan of David Ortiz, but he says to calm down if you think Ortiz is baseball’s new Mr. October.

“He did a great job [in the playoffs]. There’s only one Mr. October,” the former Yankees’ slugger said on HuffPost Live. “Don’t say nothing silly now.”

Ortiz earned World Series MVP honors this week after the Red Sox beat the Cardinals to clinch the championship, with the Boston DH hitting a ridiculous .688 (11-for-16) with two homers, six RBIs, a .760 on-base percentage and a 1.188 slugging percentage.

For his postseason career, Ortiz has a superb slash line of .295/.409/.553 with 17 homers and 60 RBIs in 82 games. He’s led the Sox to three World Series titles.

Jackson, meanwhile, posted a career playoff slash line of .357/.457/.755 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs in 27 games. So he’s still delivered better production than Ortiz.

Still, Jackson admitted, “I like to watch Big Papi play for sure.” And he said he had no problem seeing the Yankees’ arch-rivals winning it all.

“Not at all for me. I really had great admiration for the teams in the World Series – Dodgers, Detroit, St. Louis, the Red Sox,” Jackson said of the four teams who advanced to LCS competition. “I thought any one would have been a great representation of being a champion.”
