NCAA: Two Oklahoma St. QBs will split opener

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy still hasn’t chosen a starting quarterback for the 13th-ranked Cowboys’ season opener on Aug. 31 against Mississippi State. Instead, he announced both senior Clint Chelf and sophomore J.W. Walsh will each see action at the neutral-site game in Houston.

Duke coach David Cutcliffe said walk-on Hud Mellencamp will continue to practice with the football team while he deals with felony battery charges in Indiana.

Cutcliffe said the son of rocker John Mellencamp will remain practicing, and “we’ll let the legal due process occur.”

Hud Mellencamp, 19, is charged with punching and kicking a 19-year-old man last month.

The attorney for North Carolina State running back Shadrach Thornton said his client is receiving counseling that could lead to the dismissal of a misdemeanor charge of assault on a female.

HOOPS: WNBA fines Liberty coach Laimbeer

Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer was fined an undisclosed amount by the WNBA for comments he made after their loss at Minnesota on Sunday. Laimbeer was critical of the fact Lynx star Maya Moore was still in the game late in the fourth quarter with her team comfortably ahead.
