Oil heiress’ $35M-plus West Village ‘fortress’ on the block

Texas oil heiress Hyatt Bass and her screenwriter husband, Josh Klausner, who wrote the film “Date Night,” are quietly showing their ground-up, 7,000-square-foot, ultra-secure compound for “$35 million or more” in the heart of the landmarked West Village, Gimme Shelter has learned.

Last year, we reported they were the mystery buyers of the property at 335 W. 12th St. They and their two sons, however, never moved into the mansion.

Hyatt’s mother, Anne Bass, was infamously held hostage in 2007 in her own home in Connecticut as Hyatt’s oldest son was sleeping upstairs. Hyatt took no chances building this home, which she bought for $7.5 million in 2001. “The house was built specifically for this family around their security needs,” said one person who has recently toured the property.

And while it features nice-sized rooms and a lovely terrace and garden, any new buyer will likely have to re-do everything because it now feels like an “armed fortress,” a viewer said, adding, “the house has issues. It is so security-oriented that it feels locked-in and weird from the moment you enter. There is no gracious entryway. Nobody will want to live like that.”
