Sandy evacuation order never given to Canarsie: lawsuit

As Hurricane Sandy barreled toward the five boroughs, city officials put out color-coded evacuation maps, blanketed flood-prone neighborhoods with fliers and even went door-to-door to tell people to get out.

But a group of Canarsie residents claim they never got the message.

About a dozen Brooklynites say federal authorities listed their nabe as being Zone A, where residents were told to flee the storm, but that the city failed to update its maps to say the same, according to a lawsuit.

City officials and the Office of Emergency Management were “negligent and careless,” the Brooklyn Supreme Court suit charges.

The city made sure to warn people in Gravesend and Coney Island, says lawyer Philippe Tardieu, but, “Their maps did not show Canarsie being in Zone A.”

The city will review the allegations, a spokeswoman said.
