Ron Darling: Mets need a starting pitcher

Fresh off watching the Dodgers knock off the Braves, TBS analyst Ron Darling breaks down Los Angeles’ chances against the Cardinals and talks about the Mets’ offseason priorities with The Post’s Justin Terranova.

Q: What stood out for you in the Dodgers’ NLDS win over the Braves?

A: I’ve seen Hanley Ramirez play a lot of great baseball. I’ve never seen him on a run like this. Not that I am surprised by it, but when he’s like this he’s one of the top five hitters in the game. I haven’t seen him play like that in a long time.

Q: Are they the favorites over the Cardinals?

A: I think it’s going to be closer than a lot of people think, especially since the Dodgers will be without Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. But the combination of (Clayton) Kershaw and (Zack) Greinke is as good or better than anyone else.

Q: What did you think of Don Mattingly’s decision to start Kershaw in Game 4?

A: Great decision. This time of year you want to use your best player as often as you can. It’s important to have your fourth and fifth starter, but the more Kershaw pitches the more the Dodgers are going to be favorites. I am big fan of Don Mattingly’s. In today’s game you go from being questioned about the Kershaw move to being a hero. He is a great manager.

Q: Are the Red Sox the overall favorite?

A: Boston is playing the highest level of all the teams. So, yes they are the team to beat. I am surprised they could almost win 30 games more than they did last season, but it’s not like the cupboard was bare and John Farrell has done a superb job. They’ve really shown how important chemistry is for a team.

Q: What would you like to see the Mets do this offseason?

A: They have to get a starting pitcher with (Matt) Harvey out. Maybe you get a veteran guy out there on a one or two-year deal to help with the younger pitchers, teach them how to be pros. And they need offense, whether you make a big splash or do what the Red Sox did and get some capable pros. The toughest decision for the Mets is what players on the roster they want to keep.
