Jets returning to Cortland for training camp

The Jets announced on Wednesday they will return to Cortland, N.Y., for training camp this summer.

The team explored a few other options, but ultimately decided to return to SUNY Cortland for the fifth time in Rex Ryan’s six seasons as coach. Many players do not like going away for camp and sleeping in dormitories, but Ryan believes getting the team away from home is beneficial.

“I love the fact that we are going back to Cortland,” Ryan said in a statement from the team. “Everyone knows how I feel about going away. I think it is a big part of building our team camaraderie. The community, the school and the people of Cortland have been outstanding and we are all excited to be going back this summer.”

The Jets have not announced the dates of training camp yet, but it could start as early as July 23.

The team is also planning a family-oriented event on Long Island during training camp that will feature players. The team held practices at Hofstra, the Jets’ former training-camp home, during the first two years they went to Cortland, but have not been back in Hempstead, N.Y., since 2010.

Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo visited the Jets on Wednesday, a source confirmed. Garoppolo, who won the Walter Payton Award as the top player in the FCS, is being projected as a second-round pick.
