METS STILL EYE BROOKLYN TEAM

Fred Wilpon’s dream of having pro baseball return to Brooklyn is on hold, but the Mets have other plans to get baseball back.

The Met owner had been trying since last year to move the short-season Single-A Pittsfield Mets of the NY-Penn League to Coney Island, and thought he had come to an agreement. But a disagreement over who would control the minor-league team has thwarted the deal.

But the Mets are still planning to find another team to play in Coney Island.

“We are exploring alternatives,” Met VP Dave Howard said. “We are still confident we can get a team to play there.”

Howard said the most likely scenario was to switch affiliations in the NY-Penn League and bring that team here. He said they had their sights on a team, but would not reveal when it would happen.

The Mets want to retain control over the team because it will be in their market and apparently owner Bill Gladstone and his partners were unwilling to relinquish it and will remain in Pittsfield for now.
