MARCHAND’S MATCHUP OF THE WEEK

YES vs. SNY

(Whose game analysts are better?)

If you were going to bet on a former Met pitcher in his first year on a New York regional sports network to become a breakout star, the easy preseason money would have been on YES’ Al Leiter.

While Leiter has been solid, but not spectacular, in his first full year as an analyst, SNY’s Ron Darling has brought the goods because he simplifies the complicated and illuminates with strong examples.

With Darling joined by the always candid Keith Hernandez, SNY has a super-strong analyst tandem. YES can come close to matching SNY, but YES’ depth is actually a negative. Leiter, Jim Kaat and Paul O’Neill are all good listens, even if they don’t have the camaraderie that Hernandez and Darling display.

But Bobby Murcer and Ken Singleton barely give much insight into this year’s Yankee club. So in the end, Darling leads SNY to a Subway Series Matchup victory.
