VITO VETOES NEW BID AT RE-ELECTION

Rep. Vito Fossella maintained he’s “not a candidate” for re-election yesterday, after The Post reported that the Republican running for Fossella’s seat was nominated for a judgeship – possibly clearing a path for the congressman’s comeback.

“I am once again deeply humbled by the outpouring of support that I have received from people throughout the district urging me to stand for re-election, but I am not a candidate for Congress,” said Fossella, who had previously stated he wouldn’t seek re-election after a drunken-driving and second-family scandal.

The Post reported yesterday that Manhattan GOPers nominated former Assemblyman Robert Straniere for a judgeship Monday night.

Straniere himself yesterday insisted he had “no knowledge and no authorization” of the nomination and would refuse it.
