COUNCIL ‘DISSES’ LAUDER

The City Council will introduce a bill Tuesday to give elected city officials a shot at a third term permanently – a move that directly contradicts the wishes of billionaire term-limits advocate Ron Lauder.

“As I understand the mayor’s bill, it is a bill that would permanently change term limits from eight years to 12 years,” Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan) said yesterday.

When asked about Lauder’s position, she replied, “We typically don’t write any ‘Lauder’ options in legislation.”

Mayor Bloomberg said the bill is currently being negotiated between his staff and the council.

Cosmetics heir Lauder spent millions of his own cash in the 1990s on public referenda to uphold a two-term limit for elected city officials.

This week, he told The Post he would support a one-time extension of term limits, given the value of Bloomberg’s financial expertise in the current economic crisis.

Neither Lauder nor his spokesman returned multiple calls yesterday seeking comment on whether he would bankroll an opposition effort if the final bill does not reflect his wishes.
