Red Bulls cut ties with defender Pearce

The Red Bulls parted ways with former U.S. National Team defender Heath Pearce on Wednesday, ending his up-and-down stay in New York.

The 29-year-old is now out of contract, eligible for the MLS Re-Entry Process in December or to sign with any foreign club.

“We want to thank Heath for his time at the club since joining in 2012,” sporting director Andy Roxburgh said in a statement. “Following our discussions with Heath after the conclusion of the 2013 season, it was decided to not offer him a new contract in order to allow both parties to go in our separate ways. We wish Heath the best of luck in the next stage of his career.”

The Red Bulls acquired Pearce from Chivas USA in May 2012 in exchange for young homegrown striker Juan Agudelo, allocation cash and future considerations. Pearce played 32 games for the Red Bulls, but missed the second half of this season after having hip surgery over the summer.

A good portion of his hefty $331,236 base salary ($340,736 guaranteed) was being paid by Chivas USA, making it palatable for the Red Bulls. But between the significant salary cap hit and his hip injury – which may not be fully healed by the start of next season – the Red Bulls were inclined to part ways with the former All-Star.

Pearce – who also played with Denmark’s Nordsjealland (2005-07) and Germany’s Hansa Rostock (2007-09) – has 35 caps for the U.S., including being part of the 2009 FIFA Confederation Cup and Gold Cup teams.
