Skinner a candidate at Hofstra

Former Boston College coach Al Skinner is a candidate to replace Tim Welsh at Hofstra, a source told The Post.

Skinner, who interviewed with St. John’s and Rutgers regarding their vacancies following the Eagles’ disappointing 15-16 season, is the stoic, risk-free brand of coach the Pride is looking for, especially following Welsh’s resignation yesterday after his DWI arrest last week.

Skinner, a Mount Vernon native, spent 13 seasons at Boston College, compiling a 247-165 record, before stepping down in March. He has coached in nine NCAA tournaments, seven with the Eagles and two with Rhode Island, where he began his career and coached for nine seasons.

Hofstra athletic director Jack Hayes isn’t working under a drop-dead timetable, a source said, especially while the dust settles regarding the Welsh situation. Welsh was in line to make $650,000 a year for the life of his five-year contract.

Naofall Folahan, a 6-foot-11, 220-pound center from Massachusetts, has committed to Wagner, bringing the Seahawks’ class to five.

Folahan, from Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., was considering Tulane and Davidson. He is the third recruit corralled by new coach Dan Hurley in less than five weeks.

Mike Rice will be officially introduced as the new coach at Rutgers later this week, a source said, perhaps tomorrow.
