Girls basketball roundup: Carey, Hill top Spellman

Kelsey Carey and St. Joseph Hill continued their torrid start.

The sophomore forward scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the host Hilltoppers to a 51-48 win over Cardinal Spellman in non-league girls basketball Sunday on Staten Island. Brittany Spoto had 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals and Lauren DeForte added eight points and seven steals for Hill, which is off to a 5-0 start.

Its defense forced 25 turnovers by Spellman (3-2) and helped it jump ahead 15-5 in the first quarter. Troi Melton led the Pilots with 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Onia Webb tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds and Amber Griffin added five points and seven rebounds.

St. Peter’s 72, Our Lady of Lourdes 46: Ashley Motrechuk dropped in 21 points, including five 3-pointers and 8-of-9 shooting, and added eight rebounds and four blocks for St. Peter’s (2-0) in non-league. Jamie O’Hare scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists and Christine Kline chipped in 13 points and seven assists.

Bergtraum 73, Peekskill 52: Shequana Harris had 22 points, Ashley Gomez had 17 points and Shaniqua Reese added 11 points and five rebounds for the the Lady Blazers (4-0), who led 42-16 at halftime in a home non-league game Saturday afternoon. Sheridan Taylor and Jazmin Garcia each had 16 points for upstate Peekskill (2-1).

UNDER ARMOUR CLASSIC

St. Anthony’s (L.I.) 75, Wings 26: Aquillin Hayes had 12 points to lead Wings (5-1) at St. John the Baptist in West Islip, L.I. Symone Kelly had 15 points, Lauren Williams had 14 points and Kerrin Maurer added 10 for St. Anthony’s (2-1).

John F. Kennedy 53, Commack (L.I.) 39: Joya McFarland and Shaquaya Daniels had 14 points each to lead Kennedy (4-3) at St. John the Baptist on Long Island. Deaisia Acklin added 10 points for the Knights, who visit rival Manhattan Center on Monday.

PEGGY DUGGAN TOURNAMENT

Horace Mann 63, Holy Child 49: Maddy Gordon had 16 points and eight rebounds and Clara Hill tallied 16 points and six boards to help lift host Horace Mann (2-0) to the Peggy Duggan Tournament Saturday. Rachel Lander chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds and Sam Schiff had eight points and eight boards.
