Neil Patrick Harris to host Spike TV’s Video Game Awards

Cable network Spike TV announced Monday that actor Neil Patrick Harris will host its 2010 Video Game Awards (VGAs), set to air Dec. 11.

Casey Patterson, executive producer of the ceremony, said in a press release the “How I Met Your Mother” star is “a big gamer and a brilliant host.”

In 2009, Harris hosted both the 63rd annual Tony Awards and the 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Earlier this year, he provided the voice for the titular web-slinger in the video game “Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.”

Presenters at this year’s VGAs will include comedian Dane Cook, G4 TV host and “Daily Show” correspondent Olivia Munn, film director Guillermo del Toro and skateboarder Tony Hawk. Rock band My Chemical Romance is set to perform at the Los Angeles event.

Announcements of major new video games such as “Batman: Arkham City,” the next installment in the “Gears of War” franchise and a game created by del Toro are also planned for the broadcast.
