Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis said he was ticketed for speeding Thursday morning while he was driving to the team’s facility for a meeting before practice.
The Jets confirmed Friday that Revis received a ticket for speeding — he said he was going 80 mph in a 40 mph zone — and careless driving on Eisenhower Parkway in Livingston.
“I mean, I’m not a speedster,” Revis said. “I don’t do that. I was a little late for work and I was just trying to get here to work. You face the consequences when you speed and that’s what happens.”
Revis said he spoke with both coach Rex Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
“First off, when I was aware of it, he was late to a team meeting. That was when he told me about the ticket,” Ryan said. “Really, we can all take notice of it. Obviously, you have to slow down. He was running late, (but) that’s not an excuse.
“You’d hate to see anybody be careless where you put somebody else at risk and put yourself at risk. That’s a reminder for all of us. We talked about a couple of things.”
Revis said he won’t fight the ticket because, “I’ve got to follow the rules as well as everybody else.”
Livingston police confirmed the citation, but declined to offer details about the traffic stop, NJ.com reported Friday.
“It was uneventful, normal,” Livingston Police Capt. Jeffrey Payne said.
The report says he is due in court Nov. 4.
Revis is expected to travel to Denver for Sunday’s game against the Broncos, but it is unclear whether he will play as he struggles with a hamstring injury.
“Still a little sore but I’m feeling good. No tweaks, no pulls,” Revis said, according to ESPN.com.
Ryan said, “I want to see how he makes the trip to Denver. We’ll have a light practice out there and by then we’ll be able to make our decision.
“To say he’ll definitely play and then he goes out there, this is a long trip, and he’s not feeling well, then we’re not going to do it. I’ve been impressed with the way he’s looked the past couple of days. We’ll see what happens when we get out there.”
Last month, Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards was arrested in Manhattan on a drunk driving charge. His blood-alcohol level was allegedly twice the legal limit.
