Dispatches from the campaign trail

Gov. Paterson inherited a seriously screwed-up state from Eliot Spitzer — and now he’s willing to take over the randy former governor’s tanking TV show.

The always affable Paterson admitted he was one of the few people who watched the debut of “Parker Spitzer” on CNN, which drew a paltry 500,000 viewers and finished third behind its cable-news competitors.

“I kind of liked the program, I really did. It’s fast-moving. The former governor as usual demonstrates an extraordinary grasp of issues,” Paterson said.

The soon-to-be out-of-work governor joked, “I think he’s been absolutely great and if anything goes wrong, I’m here to replace him.”

Diana Taylor had better watch out.

Sarah Jessica Parker — sounding just like Carrie Bradshaw dishing over Big — couldn’t stop gushing over Mayor Bloomberg at an Empire State Pride Agenda fund-raiser dinner on Thursday.

“I love that he was here and I love his conviction and I love how he speaks about an issue that is important to all of us,” Parker said of the mayor, whose girlfriend is Taylor.

Parker said she’s honored to live in Hizzoner’s town.

“I love how he made the time [for gay pride], I know he has a very busy schedule, and I’m absolutely thrilled he is our mayor,” she said.

What’s in a name?

Democratic Rep. Mike McMahon, who is battling Republican Michael Grimm for the Staten Island congressional seat, sent out a taxpayer-funded mailer from his campaign office that conveniently bashes Grimm — it’s just a different Grimm.

The flier never mentions McMahon’s opponent, but does go after Kathleen Grimm, the city’s deputy chancellor of finance, who McMahon claims slashed school-bus service to the island.

Her first name is mentioned only once.
