Firetrucks a smash

Where’s the fire?

Speeding city firetrucks have been in 3,619 smashups since 2005, records show.

On June 6, a firefighter and four civilians were hurt when an engine company’s truck and an SUV collided in Staten Island. The emergency call was later deemed bogus, the FDNY said.

A dozen firefighters were injured when two firetrucks smashed into each other at breakneck speed on a rain-soaked Brooklyn street in October 2009.

The FDNY says it has taken aggressive measures to reduce the number of major accidents involving its 442-truck fleet.

Last year’s 668 were down from 684 in 2008, FDNY stats show. There were 483 as of Oct. 1, on pace for 580 this year.
