Guards injured in Rikers brawl

A violent fight at Rikers Island sent seven jail guards to the hospital, The Post has learned.

Capt. Theo Primm and Officer Christopher Lopez, as well as several other officers, were attacked at about 3 p.m. Tuesday by two prisoners in the Robert N. Davoren Center, according to sources.

“The brutal attack on a correction officer assigned to the RNDC is yet another example of the alarming increase in inmate assaults on officers, which are seemingly occurring every week,” said Correction Officer Benevolent Association spokesman Michael Skelly.

The incident occurred when inmates refused to be locked into their cells, according to the Correction Department.

Six DOC staff members were treated and released Tuesday while the remaining staff member was held overnight for observation and released yesterday, the DOC said in a statement.

Four inmates were seen by health care staff and medically cleared, the DOC added.

They have been transferred to punitive segregation and are pending disciplinary hearings.

The DOC has referred the matter to the Office of the Bronx District Attorney.
