The Taqwacores

Welcome to Buffalo, a hot bed of Muslim punk rock. That such a scene exists in that depressed upstate city is revealed in Eyad Zahra’s “The Taqwacores,” a murky fictional look at a contingent of young, punk-obsessed Muslims living in a shabby house.

There’s certainly a good movie to be made about Muslim punk musicians in the US, but this isn’t it. The characters are clichéd and not very appealing, given their propensity for profanity and scuzzy behavior. (One dude sneezes on another’s computer, then wipes residue all over the screen.)

Why anybody should care about these people is the question of the week.
