GE recalls 174,000 dishwashers on fire hazard

General Electric has recalled 174,000 “Profile” and “Monogram” dishwashers due to a fire hazard in the models, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said Tuesday.

In the recalled models, manufactured between July 2002 and December 2006, water may drip onto the electronic control board, “causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector,” the CPSC said in a statement. “This poses a fire hazard to consumers.”

The CPSC said GE has received five reports of fires, four of which caused damage to the area around the dishwasher and one that caused minor smoke damage to a home. No injuries have been reported.

Consumers should stop using the affected products immediately and contact GE for free in-home repair, the CPSC said.
