Deadly shooting at Bronx DA’s Office was apparent suicide: police sources

An armed security guard apparently shot himself to death atop the headquarters of the Bronx District Attorney’s Office early this morning, police sources said.

Gilbert Cameron — a “special patrol” officer employed by the DA’s Office — was found on a rooftop landing at 198 E. 161st St. with a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest, sources said.

A 911 caller reported the fatal shooting about 12:30 a.m.

Police sources said foul play was not suspected, and that Cameron, 45, of Brooklyn, had apparently committed suicide.

Three years ago, a rookie probation officer, Elizabeth Luna, 30, fatally shot herself inside the building during a lunch-time incident that sparked fears a gunman was on the loose.

Cameron’s sister, Karlene Cameron, also of Brooklyn, said her brother’s death was apparently unrelated to the massive police ticket-fixing scandal currently being probed by Bronx prosecutors.

“I don’t think that anything about work was bothering him,” Karlene Cameron said.

“He lost his wife over a year and a couple of months ago to ovarian cancer.”

The Jamaican native, who didn’t have any children, enjoyed watching action and comedy movies, especially the “Madea” series and Eddie Murphy’s “The Nutty Professor,” his sister said.

“He was quiet and kept to himself most of the time, apart from when he came here and had something to eat and we would talk and laugh,” she said.

In addition to his sister, Cameron is survived by his mother and three brothers.

Last month, a 30-year NYPD veteran embroiled in the ticket-fix case tried to electrocute himself after testifying under immunity before a grand jury.

Sources said union delegate Robert McGee became despondent after learning he might also have to testify in open court and touched the electrified third rail at the 238th Street subway station.

Sources have said the grand jury recently voted to indict 17 cops, but the charges have not yet been unsealed.
