Book of Jobs

Need a little comfort over Steve Jobs’s untimely death? In mid-November, Agate B2 Books will release a collection of Jobs-isms, titled “I, Steve: Steve Jobs In His Own Words,” edited by George Beahm. It’s the same treatment given such luminaries as Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln and Christopher Hitchens and offers Jobs’ views on life, death, technology and design, among other topics.

Here are a few quotes:

“We’re not going to be the first to this party, but we’re going to be the best.”

–Apple event for iPhone OS 4.0, April 8, 2010

“What a computer is to me is the most remarkable tool that we have ever come up with. It’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.”

–Memory & Imagination, 1990

“The organization is clean and simple to understand, and very accountable. Everything just got simpler. That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity.”

–Bloomberg Businessweek, May 12, 1998

“[D]eath is the most wonderful invention of life. It purges the system of these old models that are obsolete. I think that’s one of Apple’s challenges, really. When two young people walk in with the next thing, are we going to embrace it and say this is fantastic? Are you going to be willing to drop our models, or are we going to explain it away? I think we’ll do better, because we’re completely aware of it and we make it a priority.”

–Playboy, February 1985

“Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

–Commencement address, Stanford University, June 12, 2005
