Push to rename corner ‘Beastie Boy Square’

An already hip Lower East Side corner is now poised to get some hop.

A community board committee will weigh Tuesday whether to co-name the intersection of Ludlow and Rivington streets “Beastie Boys Square,” for the rap group that featured the corner on its album “Paul’s Boutique.”

The Beastie Boys featured the corner in question on their album, “Paul’s Boutique.”

“Beastie Boys have always been a favorite of mine and I wanted to honor them,” said Brooklynite LeRoy McCarthy, who launched an online petition in September that’s collected over a thousand signatures.

Beastie backers said it’s hip to be for the square.

Added a biased Israel Horovitz, the proud pop of Beastie Boy Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz: “Any spot that’s named for my kid is a good spot.”

The Community Board 3 meeting will be the first step in the process to make the change official.

The change requires City Council approval.

“They [City Council] are knowledgeable of hip hop, a lot of them were raised on hip hop — at their Sweet Sixteen parties and bar mitzvahs — so you don’t have to explain to them who Biggie Smalls was. They don’t necessarily have the preconceived negative approach to all hip hop,” McCarthy said.

In 2009, Queens became the first borough to have a hip hop street — Run DMC JMJ Way at Hollis Avenue and 205th Street, a tribute to the group and member Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, who was murdered in 2002.

A park at State and Columbia streets in Brooklyn Heights was renamed last year to honor Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch who died in 2012 of cancer.
