ROBINSON HAPPY FOR A-ROD

Brooks Robinson was the top third baseman of his generation, and he doesn’t begrudge Alex Rodriguez opting out of his Yankees contract to become a free agent.

“More power to him,” Robinson said. “I’m happy for him.”

But Robinson knows that no matter how much money Rodriguez makes – or homers he hits – he’ll be lacking something without a ring.

“His career won’t be complete until he gets into a World Series,” said the 1970 World Series MVP.

Robinson, who won 16 Gold Gloves in his 23-year career, said he understands why Rodriguez would make the decision he did.

“Those are the rules of the game, he’s just taking advantage of [them],” said Robinson, who spent all 23 of his seasons in Baltimore. “Scott Boras is a pretty sharp guy and he knows how to operate. I played under a system where we had the reserve clause. The players run the game now.”

It certainly seemed that way when the news of Rodriguez’s opting out came during Game 4 of the World Series.

“Who knows who leaked it, if it was Boras?” Robinson said at the Boys Club All Sports Hall of Fame Dinner last night at the Waldorf Astoria. “I really like [Rodriguez]. To me, he’s a class guy.”

And Robinson’s not convinced Rodriguez won’t stay in The Bronx.

“They can change their mind in a second,” Robinson said of the Yankees.
