BASEBALL: Red Sox sweep Twins

Brad Penny (2-0) pitched six solid innings after Tim Wakefield won a rain-shortened complete game, and the Red Sox finished a doubleheader sweep of the Twins with a 7-3 victory last night in Boston.

Wakefield (2-1) threw a five-hitter for his second consecutive complete game in the opener, a 10-1 win that was called after seven innings because of rain. Penny allowed two earned runs in the finale as the Red Sox extended their winning streak to seven games after a 2-6 start.

NBA: Mutombo calls it quits

Dikembe Mutombo, 42, said his 18-year career is finished after a knee injury knocked him out of the Rockets’ playoff game Tuesday night in Portland.

* Derrick Rose became the third Bulls player to win the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award yesterday, joining Michael Jordan and Elton Brand. O.J. Mayo of the Grizzlies finished second.

FOOTBALL: Fridge still in hospital

Former Bears defensive lineman William “Refrigerator” Perry remained hospitalized in serious condition yesterday in Aiken, S.C., to deal with complications from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a chronic inflammation disorder of the peripheral nerves.

* Former Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith was pulled over yesterday afternoon and found with crack cocaine and marijuana in his car, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Smith, who played 10 seasons for Jacksonville, was pulled over on Interstate 95 in Jacksonville for excessive window tint on his 2009 Mercedes Benz, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper said.

During a search, the trooper found crack cocaine, marijuana and a business card with powder cocaine residue in the car’s center console. Smith faces multiple drug charges, plus a charge of driving with a suspended license. He was being held at the Duval County Jail with no bond set.

* The Lions, who own the first pick in Saturday’s NFL Draft, reportedly are negotiating with Georgia QB Matthew Stafford.

NHL: Three finalists for Calder Trophy

Columbus goaltender Steve Mason and forwards Bobby Ryan of Anaheim and Kris Versteeg of Chicago were named Calder Trophy finalists for rookie of year.

OBIT: Irving Glick, 92

Irving V. Glick, the U.S. Open tennis tournament doctor for more than 25 years, died Friday at his home in Great Neck after a long illness. He was 92. Glick was a team doctor for St. John’s basketball for about 20 years, including the school’s 1985 Final Four team.

HOOPS: Kentucky vs. UConn at Garden

Kentucky, under new coach John Calipari, will play Big East power Connecticut on Dec. 9 in the third annual SEC/Big East Challenge. The game will be part of a doubleheader at Madison Square Garden. Georgia will play St. John’s in the opener.

* Lance Stephenson ‘s recruitment could take another turn, if, as expected, Xavier Henry announces today that he is headed to Kansas. Henry, a 6-foot-6 senior from Oklahoma City, had been recruited by Kansas before committing to Memphis. But Henry changed his mind when John Calipari left the Tigers for Kentucky. Kansas has been considered the front-runner for Stephenson, a 6-5 guard who guided Lincoln to four straight PSAL titles. The Coney Island product has said he also is considering St. John’s and Maryland. — Dan Martin
