TRANSIT WORKERS RAIL AGAINST LAYOFFS

Nearly 1,000 seething transit workers yesterday let their bosses have it outside MTA headquarters, ripping a plan to lay off hundreds of employees and remove dozens of station-agent positions to help balance the budget.

“We have so many supervisors on each line that it’s beyond pathetic,” said Wayne Friedman, an operator with the No. 7 subway line.

“They’re trying to take it all away from the bottom, like eliminating clerks that make riders feel more comfortable.”

During the massive rally, which took over two city blocks and spilled onto Madison Avenue, the Transport Workers Union Local 100 members also laid into Albany pols for stalling on a financial bailout.

“Governments don’t care about the little guy,” said bus driver Louis Lopez, who has only been on the job one year.

“I’m getting passengers who ask me all the time if their route is going to be shut down. It’s all we talk about in the garage.”

Local 100 usually reserves large-scale rallies for contract disputes. This year, its contract is in binding arbitration.
