A beloved East Village florist who was run over by an allegedly drunk and drugged-up Queens driver last June has died from his injuries.
Akkas Ali, 62, was working at the East Village Farm and Grocery at Second Avenue and East 4th Street about 7 a.m. June 19 when a car driven by Shaun Martin of Queens jumped the curb and smashed into the storefront.
Martin, who was allegedly high on PCP and meth, was going so fast that when his Nissan Altima ran onto the sidewalk it catapulted a fire hydrant nearly one city block before taking out a muni meter, a tree, a row of bikes and a light pole.
Eight people were hurt in the accident, and Ali, who suffered broken bones and brain trauma, died from his injuries two weeks ago, the neighborhood Web site Bowery Boogie reported Wednesday morning.
The Manhattan DA slapped Martin with a slew of charges, including two counts of first-degree vehicular assault, two counts of felony assault with serious injury, felony driving while ability impaired by drugs and alcohol.
Cops at the time said Martin and a gal pal were speeding down Second Avenue when he lost control and crashed.
Martin is due back in Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the DA’s office would not say this morning whether the charges would be upgraded following Ali’s death.
