Woman says discount store targets minorities for theft, fraud

A black Manhattan woman is suing the discount chain Pay Half, alleging that its stores target minority customers for theft and credit-card fraud.

In her class-action suit, Ginger Marville, 24, says she was at the Pay Half on 125th Street in November when she was hauled down to a basement room with her 4-year-old daughter and accused of shoplifting a $35 pair of pants.

Marville was eventually released after police and store staff determined she was not trying to steal the clothing.

“Marville’s experience at Pay Half is not unique. Instead, there are hundreds of other innocent minority individuals who have been racially profiled and subsequently stopped, detained, questioned or accused of committing a crime by Pay Half employees,” her Manhattan civil suit says.

She’s seeking unspecified damages.

Pay Half lawyer Cindy Birnbaum Ronson told The Post she had not yet seen the suit but that “if any customer feels like he or she was treated poorly, we of course want to know and would address those concerns.

“However, the suggestion that our company would discriminate against anyone based on race is completely against everything we stand for.’’
