Braylon Edwards only will guarantee that the Jets will be ready for the Bengals on Saturday.
A week after guaranteeing victory in the win-and-in finale against the Bengals — “We won’t lose this game,” he declared — Edwards dialed back the rhetoric, a bit, letting his coach make the brash statement.
Rex Ryan yesterday pronounced the Jets to be Super Bowl favorites in his (possibly delusional) mind. But while yesterday Edwards said he supported Ryan’s claim, he was both optimistic yet cautious when it comes to his team’s postseason chances.

Edwards said last week’s game against the Bengals and this week’s game against the Bengals aren’t analogous.
“This is a different situation,” Edwards said. “I’m not going to sit here and say, ‘We won’t lose this game.’ It’s a different type of situation. But we definitely will be prepared. Cincinnati’s going to have to bring everything they have to beat us.”
While Edwards talks about this game being a different situation for the Jets, it’s also a different situation for him. The fifth-year pro, acquired from Cleveland after Week 4, has never been to the playoffs.
“I’m happy and excited,” said Edwards, who said Eric Mangini texted him congratulations this week.
“It’s a career turnaround,” he said of going from woeful Cleveland to the playoff-bound Jets.
In a sense, Edwards remains an enigma, a talented player (he was picked third overall in the 2005 draft) who had a spectacular 2007-08 season with 80 catches, 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns. But other than that one year, Edwards has produced modestly. Last season, he caught 55 passes for 873 yards and three TDs, and this year with the Browns/Jets combined, he posted 45 catches for 680 and four touchdowns.
With the Jets, Edwards played 12 games, tallying 35 catches, 541 yards and the four TDs. Though those totals certainly are affected by working with a rookie quarterback in a run-first offense.
“A credit to him is even though he’s not having gaudy numbers because we’re not throwing the ball all over the park, you could put a highlight reel together of the blocks he’s been making,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. “He’s just bought in.”
Edwards, who is a potential free agent and could be playing his last game as a Jet, believes the Jets “can possibly go the distance,” citing their chemistry and confidence. As for Ryan’s claim that the Jets are the favorites, Edwards isn’t about to disagree.
“If that’s how he feels, that’s how I feel,” he said. “If that’s what he said, then I support it.”
