Evangelist Robertson says pact with devil haunts Haitians

Evangelist and television commentator Pat Robertson suggested Wednesday that the Haiti earthquake may have been a direct consequence of a “Satanic pact.”

He even questioned whether Tuesday’s quake – which is thought to have killed up to 100,000 people – may have been a “blessing in disguise”, MyFox National reported.

“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” Robertson said during a broadcast of The 700 Club on the Christian Broadcasting Network.

“They (Haitians) were under the heel of the French … and they got together and swore a pact to the devil.

“They said ‘We will serve you’ … and so, the devil said ‘Okay, it’s a deal’ and kicked the French out.”

During an earlier segment with a reporter for Robertson’s CBN News, the televangelist questioned whether the earthquake in Haiti was a “blessing in disguise.”

“They need to have … a great turning to God,” he concluded, adding that the earthquake may have been a direct consequence of their “Satanic pact”.

News of Robertson’s commentary spread through social networking websites Twitter and Facebook.com, where outraged users expressed disgust by the statement.

“May God forgive us for the times we make mistakes like Pat Robertson and fail to show compassion for the poor,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another posted: “Pat Robertson’s reported comments on Haiti are embarrassing, unhelpful and counter-gospel.”

Robertson founded CBN in 1961. Five years later, he launched the television program The 700 Club, which featured the televangelist’s political and religious commentary.

Along with Robertson’s commentary and insight, the program spotlights current events, including political and natural events of crisis.
