Thunderbolt rolls again in Coney Island

Thrill seekers flocked to Coney Island Saturday for a ride on the Thunderbolt — the amusement park’s first new roller coaster since the Cyclone opened in 1927.

The 115-foot-tall ride replaces the original wooden Thunderbolt that ran from 1925 to 1982 before it was torn down in 2000.

“The G-forces are insane!” said Erik Knapp, 48, who was second in line Saturday. “The ride wants to go one way, and you feel like you’re going to go another.”

The two-minute ride hits 55 mph and has a 90-degree drop that leads into a 100-foot loop.

“That was crazy!” said Brea Banks, 17, among the first in line with mom Maritza, 49. “My new favorite ride might be this one.”

Cookie Glanstein, 70, rode for her late mom, Mae Timpano, who lived in a house under the old ride.

“It’s bittersweet,” she said. “It would have been nice if my mother would be here to see it.”
