Davis uses Francoeur’s bat to break out of slump

Ike Davis benched his slumping bats yesterday. Jeff Francoeur’s lumber, however, was the solution.

Davis broke out of his slump during the Mets’ 6-1 win over the Marlins, ripping a career-high four hits and telling The Post afterward that he did so with the aid of Francoeur’s bat. Before the game, the rookie first baseman told Francoeur he was going to use the right fielder’s bat. Why?

“Need to switch something up,” Davis said.

Davis proceeded to drive a leadoff double in the second inning, contribute an RBI single in the third, deliver another double in the fifth and smack a single in the eighth. His 4-for-4 day also included three runs scored and lifted his average from .248 to .268. And yes, he said he will use Francoeur’s bat again today.

Davis said Francoeur’s bat has a larger hitting head than his, and this turned out to be an in-game taste test — Francoeur said Davis had never even used his bats during batting practice.

Entering yesterday, Davis had gone just 3-for-29 in his last seven games, striking out nine times. But Davis had also put up two homers and five RBIs, prompting him to marvel that he delivered “my best run production of the season” in the midst of the slump. Yesterday, though, he finally got going.

“I needed it badly,” Davis said.
