Teachers v. students equals a kickin’ start to summer fun at PS 52

It’s not every day you get to kick your teacher — even if it is in good fun!

Students at PS 52 made sure their teachers got a grand ole’ lickin’ when they locked friendly horns with them on the playing field for a game of kickball to celebrate the start of summer the sporting way.

A select crop of fourth- and fifth-graders had a chance to see another side of the other adults in their lives as they squared off with them in the schoolyard on East 29th Street between Voorhies Avenue and Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay.

And they weren’t disappointed!

Good-sport Principal Ilene Altschul even prepped for the battle by ditching her usual business suit for cut-off pants, a T-shirt and sneakers, drawing cheers from students watching from the bleachers.

The aim, of course, was to win major bragging rights as victors of the playground and competitive league game known as “kick baseball” when it was invented in the early 1900s by Ohio park supervisor Nicholas Seuss.

“It is all about having fun, teamwork and showing school spirit,” said Altschul, who helped trounce the students, 23-13!
