Former NFL MVP: Jets’ Sanchez ‘wants to be great’

At least one quarterback who got his team to the Super Bowl thinks Mark Sanchez can do the same with the Jets.

Former Raiders QB Rich Gannon, the 2002 NFL MVP when the Raiders played in Super Bowl XXXVII, worked with Sanchez recently and liked very much what he saw.

“The great thing about Mark is he doesn’t just want to be good, he wants to be great,” Gannon said, according to USA Today. “And he’s willing to put in the work to get there.

“He has a very bright future.”

So do the Jets, if Sanchez continues to improve.

“It’s incredible what this guy has accomplished already in winning playoff games on the road in Cincinnati and in San Diego,” said Gannon, now a CBS analyst. “He’s a leader with a great deal of toughness.

“If they can have a little bit better balance and get to be the 15th-ranked passing team (from 31st last year), boy, the Jets can do some damage.”

Gannon said he and Sanchez focused on better decision-making late in games, avoiding sacks and interceptions, and improving on third down. Last season, Sanchez’s first, he threw 12 TD passes and 20 interceptions, and was sacked 26 times (fumbling 10).

“I really applaud a guy like that who wants to get better,” Gannon said.
