Former Boys & Girls star finds a perfect match in Hofstra

Dwan McMillan’s journey to Division I basketball came to a satisfying close Friday night.

After three years of high school at Boys & Girls, two more at St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.), one junior college season apiece at Miami Dade College (Fla.) and Indian Hills Community College (Iowa), the Brooklyn product signed a National Letter of Intent with Hofstra, becoming the third city player to join new coach Mo Cassara’s program.

“It’s relief, just joy,” he said. “I’m happy. Now it’s time to go to work.”

When Chaz Williams opted to transfer to UMass, the Pride had a void at the point guard position. They filled it with the 6-foot-1 McMillan, a speedy distributor. He felt comfortable with Cassara and his staff.

McMillan chose Hofstra over Creighton, Wichita State, Marshall, Oklahoma, and Iowa State.

McMillan was set to attend South Florida two years ago, but found out in late August he wasn’t fully qualified. He went to Miami Dade, but opted to leave after a year. South Florida wanted him to remain there, so the two decided to split ways. He flourished at Indian Hills, averaging 13 points, eight assists, and five rebounds per game and leading the team, which won the Region 11 regular-season title.

“It feels great to finally be back home,” he said. “I get to play in front of my friends and family who haven’t seen me play since St. Benedict’s, or even longer than that.”

McMillan has known assistant coach Allen Griffin, a Brooklyn native like himself, since he was young. Steve DeMeo, another assistant, recruited McMillan to Providence three years back.

Plus, he is extremely familiar with his new teammates. McMillan played with or against Charles Jenkins, Nathaniel Lester and Yves Jules on the AAU circuit. He, in fact, was in the same division – Brooklyn AA – as Lester in high school.

“It’s a great opportunity for me, it’s a great situation to play with Charles Jenkins,” he said. “It was great timing. I can step right in and win right away, hopefully get this team to the NCAA Tournament. I don’t have to make any adjustments. I’ve played with most of these guys.”
