Spector’s debut disc: anatomy of a crime scene

The Ronettes, the Ramones, the Righteous Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner and members of The Beatles were just a few bricks in the wall of sound that 70-year-old Phil Spector built. Now that the legendary producer is behind bars for murder, it seems the cap on his career is also a crime: a 10-song dance-pop album by his 30-year-old wife, Rachelle Spector.

The record, produced by Spector three years ago while he was still on bail awaiting trial, is a pop drivel vanity project that has no relation to anything the legendary producer has ever helped craft.

Rachelle has a thin, breathy, little-girl voice that requires auto-tuning on the opening track, “Here in My Heart.” If you’re looking for the connection between the couple, this is where Rachelle sings to Phil: “You’re here with me night and day, even when you’re far away.” Against a mix of ’80s synth-pop disco, the words seem unbelievable.

Later, on both “The Risk” and “Got Me Where You Want Me,” Rachelle sings in a narrow range like bad, overproduced Britney. Among the best songs is the syncopated “That Boy,” where her vocals are drowned out by backup singers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any better than that.
