1/1/11 delivery a special one: City’s first baby of New Year born at SUNY Downstate

Talk about a special delivery!

A Brooklyn couple welcomed their very own princess into the world exactly at the stroke of midnight, making her the city’s first New Year’s baby for 2011.

Princess Avana Andrews weighed in at 6 ounds,8 ounces to the delight of mom Helena Ross and dad Dwayne Andrews.

The little doll’s midnight delivery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center makes her the city’s unofficial first.

But further south in Brooklyn, daughter No. 3 for doctors Mehnaz and Muhammad Waseem came in a very close second.

Their baby girl Alishba, a fetching 7-pound, 3-ounce bundle of good luck, was born just five seconds after midnight.

“I was in such pain and distress that I didn’t care if it came before or after the New Year,” laughed the delighted mom.

“But now, we’re very excited.”

The Waseems are both physicians from Pakistan who emigrated 15 years ago, the officials said. Their other daughters are 8 and 6.

And just over the river at Beth Israel Medical Center, baby Kacper Kozlowski came into the world at 12:00:57 this morning, weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces.

Kacper’s a first-born for mom Marta and dad Jacek.

“It’s amazing whether it’s a New Year’s baby or not a New Year’s baby,” she said. “It’s just an amazing feeling to be a mother. The nurse mentioned during labor that it was close to midnight, but it didn’t matter. I didn’t care.

“I’m overwhelmed right now. I’m tired, but we’re mostly just very happy he’s healthy. That’s the important part.”

Dr. Donald Matheson, who delivered the bouncing baby boy, said he did nothing to help make Kacper’s debut a special New Year’s Day birth.

“She delivered at the time she was supposed to,” he said. “He is a healthy baby boy. Very beautiful. They’re a nice couple. They can come back for the second, third, fourth and fifth!”

Beth Israel president Dr. Harris Nagler noted the special occasion as well.

“This is the most special … because it’s today, plus the date — 1/11/11.”
