Jets’ Dixon hopes sack is ‘first of many’

Jets defensive tackle Marcus Dixon, who recorded his first NFL sack last Sunday against the Bears, figures to get the most playing time of his career today with a number of veterans being rested.

He called his first career sack “the first of many, hopefully,” and he credited the rest of the Jets defense for it.

“That sack was a straight coverage sack,” Dixon said. “The defensive backs covered everybody, and [Bears QB Jay] Cutler held the ball. I was in right place at the right time.

“Every lineman wants to get a sack under his belt . . . not just a sack but sacks,” he said. “It looks good for the resume. This is an opportunity to show [Jets GM Mike] Tannenbaum I can play and I can be a Jet. I want to show coach [Rex] Ryan what I can do on this defense. This is a great opportunity for me and I want to take advantage of it.”

* Mark Sanchez (3,291) needs 209 passing yards to become first Jets quarterback to reach 3,500 passing yards in a season since Vinny Testaverde in 2000.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson, who has averaged 100.8 rushing yards in six games against the Bills, needs 84 yards to reach 1,000 for the season, though he likely won’t play enough to get that today.

WR Braylon Edwards is seeking his third consecutive game with a touchdown reception against the Bills. . . . Dustin Keller needs two catches to become sixth tight end in franchise history to reach 150 career receptions. Keller had two touchdown receptions in the last game against Buffalo.

* LB Bryan Thomas, who leads the Jets with six sacks, is seeking his fourth consecutive game with a sack. . . . LB Jason Taylor has 20 career sacks against the Bills, the most he has had against any opponent. . . . DE Shaun Ellis has three sacks in last two games against the Bills.

The Jets have 14 kickoff or punt returns for touchdowns since 2001, the most in NFL during that span. Brad Smith is ranked second in the NFL with a 28.6-yard kickoff-return average and has two returned for touchdowns.

* Today is the 100th regular-season meeting between the Jets and Bills with Buffalo leading the series 53-46. The Bills have beaten the Jets in the Meadowlands three of the last four seasons (2006, ’07 and ’09).
