9/11 contractor agrees to repay $5M

A major contractor on the 9/11 memorial has agreed to repay the city $5 million in overcharges on other projects to avoid a civil lawsuit, officials announced today.

The Department of Investigation said that Bovis Lend Lease reached the out-of-court settlement after it analyzed more than 100 city-funded projects it managed between 1999 and 2009.

In dozens of cases, DOI said, Bovis paid foremen overtime and extra pay for which they had not worked and then passed on those expenses to the city.

Bovis is one of the city’s largest general contractors and has worked on many big-name projects, including the deconstruction of the Deutsche Bank building at Ground Zero, where two firefighters died in a 2007 blaze.

In a statement, Bovis said it had cooperated “fully” with investigators and “voluntarily” entered into the settlement without admitting liability.

“Bovis looks forward to working with the city on future construction projects,” the statement said.
