Sex & Relationships

This week’s couple: Rough seas

On paper, it seemed like Liz and Robert would get along well. They’re both the same age (31), both longtime Brooklyn residents — and they even ordered the same cocktail!

Unfortunately, when they met at the Chelsea Market seafood restaurant Cull & Pistol, the only things they agreed on were that the oysters were tasty — and that there wouldn’t be a second date.

They got along well, but find out why that wasn’t enough for them to want to see each other again.

When I met Liz, she was definitely my type, looks-wise. Personality wise, she seemed down-to-earth and genuine. Meanwhile, I didn’t get my nerves under control until I after finished my first cocktail.

We mostly kept conversation to small talk (backgrounds, jobs, Brooklyn). Telling me about her book club and the books they were reading moved us toward more interesting topics. I was a fan of Cull & Pistol, particularly the oysters and the uni tagliatelle, which were outstanding.

I would’ve preferred Liz found my attempts at wit more enjoyable, but it was a pleasant enough evening. We were a good match on paper, but we had no chemistry.

Robert arrived freshly dressed in a suit. He seemed pretty anxious, so I tried to put him at ease. We ordered the same cocktail, and he made a joke about copying my order — all night.

We mostly talked about Brooklyn but also covered normal first date topics: siblings, TV shows we watch, books we’ve read. He seemed curious about my job, which was thoughtful.

Cull & Pistol had great food and service. I enjoyed my rum cocktail and the oysters from the raw bar. I had the hamachi collar, which was tasty and satisfying.

Robert felt very familiar to me, but more friendly than romantic. I think he would probably agree that the spark wasn’t there. We walked to the subway together and said a pleasant goodbye.
