Cops shoot man after he lunges at them with knife

Police in Brooklyn shot and killed a man who lunged at them with a knife, sources said.

The officers had just pulled up at the scene of a harassment call after Dasreth Rexford, 22, allegedly threw a rock at a taxi near Hart Street and Irving Avenue in Bushwick at around 3 p.m., sources said.

Rexford, described as being around 300 pounds, then came charging at the police car while waving the knife wildly, forcing the officers to pull up the block to get away from the crazed man.

Rexford then threw a bottle at the car, causing them to continue rolling up the block, sources said.

That’s when both cops got out of the car to confront the enormous man, who again lunged at them with the knife, which witnesses described as being an 8-inch kitchen knife. One of the officers then fired several shots, striking the suspect in the chest, sources said.

“He was going after the cops with the knife above his head,” said Samuel Martinez, 41. “He was just charging the cops. He looked insane.”

“The cops were saying ‘he’s got a knife he’s got a knife stop!’” Martinez added. “They blasted him twice and he kept on charging. This guy was an animal.”

Rexford was taken to Woodhull Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
