5 offseason issues facing the Giants

A look at the key offseason issues for the Giants:

1. Determine who’s running the show

There are indications offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride might not survive the bottoming-out of his unit and if he’s replaced, a strong, established offensive mind will have to mesh with Eli Manning, who also might be in line for a new quarterbacks coach.

2. Fix the offensive line

The sight of Manning leaving the building on crutches, with his left ankle encased in a boot, was a sobering reminder the franchise quarterback needs to be protected. He was sacked a career-high 39 times. Two and possibly three new starters are needed. The only real unquestioned keeper is Justin Pugh.

3. Deal with Eli’s deal

Manning is set to count $20.4 million against the salary cap, and in order to make the many moves they need to make, the front office is going to have to take a hard look at cutting Eli’s cap number down to a more manageable figure. He is signed through the 2015 season, turns 33 on Friday and is coming off his worst season. Not an easy contract extension to figure out.

4. Backfield in motion

David Wilson’s status with a herniated disk in his neck is tenuous, at best, and GM Jerry Reese admits he can’t be counted on right now as the No. 1 running back. The cupboard is nearly bare, with Andre Brown a free agent and more of a complementary player anyway.

5. Rekindle the pass rush

Getting to the opposing quarterback was always a strength to be relied on, but not in 2013. Jason Pierre-Paul is coming off an injury-filled, two-sack season, Justin Tuck is a free agent and Mathias Kiwanuka had an unremarkable year. Finding some studs is a must.
