Subway restaurant chain president hospitalized: source

Brooklyn-born Fred DeLuca, co-founder and president of the Subway sandwich chain and the man most responsible for growing it into the restaurant chain with the world’s most locations, is back in the hospital, a source told The Post.

Last year, DeLuca was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukemia and had a bone-marrow transplant.

“Fred continues to be actively involved in the management of the Subway business,” a spokesperson for the Milford, Conn., chain said. “Recently he had a reaction to his ongoing leukemia treatment and was re-admitted to the hospital. He is expected to be released soon.”

DeLuca, who co-founded the chain 49 years ago, told USA Today last month he was back running Subway, and was 90 percent back on the job. A video of an interview with DeLuca and accompanying article was titled, “Subway CEO Back in Saddle After Cancer Scare.”
