Funding Silver’s slushy ways

The Issue: Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s use of taxpayer money to settle sexual-harassment cases.

***

Why would Sheldon Silver settle for $5 million, when he has virtually an unlimited fund — the New York State Budget — to work with (“Let’s Give Shelly $5 Million, Editorial, Feb. 15)?

The fact that the Joint Commission on Public Ethics found no wrongdoing in what Silver did should be a clarion call to all state taxpayers.

This action, or non-action, legitimizes hush funds. I can already see the rest of the legislature — not to mention the state Senate and City Council — licking their chops at the money they could steal.

Why not just publish the documents, reports, disclosures, letters and e-mails that are all destined for the shredder and still need explanations from Silver?

We have so much that could end the fiscal cliff, but politicians need it to remain in the dark.
