Giants to take a look at linebacker Jameel McClain

As always, the Giants are in need of a linebacker, probably more than one, which is why kicking the tires on former Raven Jameel McClain makes sense.

McClain isn’t keeping any secrets, as during Wednesday’s visit with the Bills in Buffalo he said his next stop will be to meet with the Giants. McClain, 28, was cut last week.

“This is the first visit and then I go to the Giants,” McClain said, according to the Bills’ website. “I’ve got more scheduled, but I tell my agent to tell me the day before. I don’t want to be wrapping my mind around too many ideas. I’m more like a get the information and go guy.”

McClain has experience playing outside linebacker and also in the middle and there’s no way yet to know where or if he fits into the Giants’ plans. Their top priority is to re-sign Jon Beason as the starting middle linebacker and, if that happens, they certainly could give McClain a look on the outside. In 10 games last season, McClain had 52 tackles for the Ravens. His 2012 season was cut short after he suffered a spinal cord contusion.

The Giants certainly have to be interested in adding a linebacker or two. Four of the linebackers off last year’s defense — Beason, Spencer Paysinger, Keith Rivers and Mark Herzlich — are free agents. Paysinger and Herzlich are restricted. Paysinger has been tendered, Herzlich thus far has not. Otherwise, the only linebacker with any experience on the roster is Jacquian Williams.

Free agency begins on Tuesday, but because McClain was cut by the Ravens, he can make visits before the signing period commences. The 6-foot-1, 245-pound McClain was an undrafted free agent from Syracuse who was released by the Ravens entering the final year of a contract that was to pay him $3.2 million. McClain has started 55 games in his six-year NFL career, all with the Ravens.
