‘Wrong man’ judge’s doubts

The presiding judge at the 1991 murder trial of a wrongfully convicted Brooklyn man who was recently released after 23 years in prison expressed reservations about the case at the time, according to court documents obtained by The Post.

“The more I hear this, the more I am disillusioned with the work of the detective,” Judge Francis Egitto said during the trial of David Ranta for a rabbi’s murder. “All I’m saying, there is an appearance of something wrong.”

Egitto also slammed prosecutors for seemingly permitting detectives to coach witnesses during the police lineup, calling the procedure “ridiculous.”
