New ad to blast Christine Quinn on term limits

The Democratic primary for mayor is heating up, with rivals of frontrunner Christine Quinn airing an ad this week — the first TV ad of the race — hitting her for extending term limits, The Post has learned.

It is being for paid in part by the Communications Workers of America Local 1180, which has yet to endorse a candidate, but whose parent union is close to rival candidate Bill de Blasio, several sources told The Post.

Opponents of the city’s horse-drawn carriages — a group that has historically opposed Quinn — is also behind the attack, sources said.

“This ad is paid for by a special interest group, with strong connections to Bill de Blasio, working to circumvent the New York City campaign finance system,” Quinn’s campaign spokesman Mike Morey said.

Ads against candidates can be purchased as independent expenditures and, if the buyers do not coordinate with any campaign they are in accordance with city campaign finance rules.

Team de Blasio claimed to know nothing of the ad and shot back, “Nothing undermined our democratic system more than when Speaker Quinn overturned term limits and let Mayor Bloomberg spend $100 million, buying four more years.”

Quinn overturned term limits in the Council in 2008 so Bloomberg could run for a third term.
