Giants crack door for Jacobs’ return

The Giants have not ruled out the re-signing of Brandon Jacobs, their one-time bruising running back, according to someone with knowledge of the situation.

This does not mean Jacobs — who spent a wasted 2012 season with the 49ers — is on his way back to the team that drafted him in 2005.

There have not been any formal discussions between the Giants and Jacobs and at this point he remains a not-very-hot commodity on the open market as the leftover players in free agency try to find teams to employ them.

“He’d love to return to New York, obviously,’’ the source said.

Jacobs is never shy about expressing his feelings. He recently posted a picture on Instagram of himself with the Giants running over a Patriots player with the caption “Trying to get back in this uniform.”

Jacobs spent the first seven years of his career with the Giants and was released following the 2011 season. He rushed for 4,849 yards in his seven seasons prior to joining the 49ers but battled through knee issues and appeared in two games in 2012, rushing for seven yards on five carries. Jacobs’ rushing totals have decreased each year since 2008, when he rushed for a career-high 1089 yards and 15 touchdowns. Jacobs will turn 31 before the start of training camp.

The Giants released Ahmad Bradshaw earlier this offseason, leaving David Wilson, the team’s first-round pick in 2012, as the team’s primary running back with Andre Brown — coming back from a broken leg — also likely to see increased time.

This would not be the first time the former fourth-round pick used social media to get a point across. Last December, Jacobs took to Instagram to voice his unhappiness with his situation on the 49ers and again posted a picture of himself in a Giants uniform.

“I am on this team rotting away so why would I wanna put any pics up of anything that say niners.” Jacobs said on Instagram.

“This is by far the worst year I ever had, I’ll tell you like I told plenty others.”

The move earned Jacobs a three-game suspension, after which he was released as he missed out on the 49ers’ Super Bowl run.
