Terror in Beantown: catch those cowards

The Issue: The explosions at the Boston Marathon, which killed three and injured over 170 people.

Cities like Boston and New York are tough. We will get together and win this fight (“Terror, Again,” Editorial, April 16).

To the cowards who go back to hiding under the rocks: We will get all of you sooner or later.

Whenever there’s a terrorist attack, there are always calls to increase the size of our military in other countries, when in actuality, we should be bringing those troops home to guard our ports, terminals, subway stations, tall buildings and airports.

These terror attacks prove that the terrorists are here already and have been here for some time.Edward Drossman

I’ve got something to say to all the cowards and evildoers of this world: Take your own life and leave God-loving, peace-loving and all human beings who are trying to live a good life alone.

There is no God who would want someone to take another human life. Tom Esworthy

The horrific and cowardly events that transpired at the Boston Marathon are painfully difficult for all of us to understand, much less accept, even in the context of today’s tumultuous world.

Despite our religious, political and cultural differences, I find it unfathomable that anyone would strive to kill or maim innocent people in order to illustrate their own barbarism and savagery.

I have worked in the music industry for the past 50 years, and have found time and again that poet William Congreve was correct when, in 1697, he wrote: “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.”

When we were making music in Memphis at Stax Records in the ’60s and ’70s, it was to make people feel good. We need more of that feel-good music today.

We might not be sure yet who committed the bombing in Boston

But we do know why: to kill innocent people.

This is precisely what drove the killers on 9/11, with the addition that they be Americans or associated with them.

That’s it.

All other discussions — except for the purpose of criminal investigation — such as the killer or killers’ alleged grievances, political or otherwise, are only distractions from that fundamental fact.

After the Boston Marathon bombings, President Obama said: “Make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this… We’ll find out why they did this.

“Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.”

He said the same thing after the attack in Benghazi.

Should we expect virtually the same results: perpetrators unknown, no one held accountable?Brenda Landrum

Regarding the president’s saying that we will catch those responsible and hold them responsible, this is empty talk.

What exactly has been done to Nidal Malik Hasan?

Years later, we are arguing about whether or not he can have a beard, and the trial for this man caught red-handed has not started.

So please, enough with platitudes.

For punishment to be an effective deterrent, it must be swift, and appropriate.

With lawyers in this country doing all they can to protect terrorists, that will never happen.
